At Hippo, we’re not unfamiliar with the motor industry. Hippo Motor Finance was set-up by Thomas and Richard, part of the well-known Preston family of Lancashire, who’ve been trading in the area since 1906.
The below timeline shows you exactly how far we have come as a family business before finally forming the Hippo Motor Group, and Hippo Motor Finance, in 2007.
The Preston family’s business ventures began in as early as 1906 by George Preston, a successful coal merchant. By 1960, his grandsons changed their business direction and entered into the motor trade. The Preston families’ first of many successes in the motoring world began in 1962. With the help of an Esso garage, Stanley and Eric Preston prosperously begun buying and selling motor cars.
Opportunity arose for a franchise BMW dealership, allowing EWS Preston to stock the latest, sought after cars through the German manufacturer. In 1977 a custom showroom was built, named Prestons BMW – a defining moment in the Preston family history.
Over a decade later, the decision to acquire the land at the end of the M65 motorway in 1991, pushed Prestons BMW to the forefront of prestige car sales. This move created a streak of winning awards for sales and standards in service.
The Prestons kicked off the ‘90s with another Custom built showroom – Hillendale Land Rover. The Land Rover brand had incredible equity, the driving force behind this new venture, enabling sales to reach an established audience.
2001 brought yet another custom built showroom – Mini BMW. BMW kept the MINI brand and launched the first MINI range for over three decades. A custom built showroom was commissioned next to Prestons BMW.
