Review: BMW 1 Series

Orange BMW 1 Series

The BMW 1 Series is one of the best rear-wheeled drive cars in its class. It offers drivers a fantastic combination of top performance, superb economy and low CO2 emissions. On top of this, the 1 Series has sharp handling and light steering, so you really do feel secure on the road. Neatly styled and cheap to run too, the 1 Series would make for a great car finance choice, whether you were using it as a small family car or business vehicle.

Whether you’re opting for petrol or diesel, the 1 Series has some great engines in the range. The 118i petrol has able acceleration and revs, and pulls very strongly. The diesel is just as capable, especially if you go for the 118d, which will give you plenty of revs. However, if you’re looking for efficiency, then you’ll be better off with the 116d ED diesel, which also offers decent performance.

Even though the 1 Series is small in size, it handles itself extremely well, especially as a small family car. The rear-wheel drive means that it’s quick to react, and provides plenty of grip on the road. The steering is a bit on the light side however, so it sometimes feels a bit unstable once you reach higher speeds. However, overall the driving experience still feels very refined and polished.

Rest assured that you’ll have safety completely covered with the 1 Series, as it scored 5 out 5 in the NCAP crash test. There are also 6 airbags as standard across the range, plus stability control. For standard you’ll also get deadlocks and an alarm and an engine immobiliser.

As for the interior, the overall quality is impressive. There are a few parts of the dashboard which don’t feel quite as expensive, and let it down slightly. Space inside is okay if you’re sat up front, or behind the steering wheel, where you’ll have more than enough room. However, into the backseats and it starts to get a little bit cramped. Whether you choose the 3 or 5 door version, you’ll have to squeeze to get into the back. Unfortunately, the boot is a bit on the narrow side too, so it’s not great if you have an overly large family or regularly carry a lot of luggage with you.

On the plus side, the 1 Series makes up for this with a fantastic infotainment system and handy equipment as standard. The entire dashboard is slick and simple to use, and the 6.5-inch screen lets you easily control the major functions of the car. As for the other equipment, you have the option of climate control, alloy wheels, Bluetooth, controls on the steering wheel, automatic lights, automatic wipers and much more. It all depends which trim you go for, but there are plenty of choices and options for all tastes.

Overall the 1 Series is a very capable car, even though it’s not the most spacious in its class, it more than makes up for it with style, practicality, and a superb range of engines. If you’re thinking of getting yourself a BMW 1 Series, then why not have a look at car finance in Blackburn, where we can help source you the perfect model.
