American author, Helen Keller said: “Life is either a great adventure or nothing” and an adventure it should be. There is no greater way of celebrating life and the world around us except through a road trip around the world. You will travel through a country rather than simply flying over it to your destination of choice.
By driving through these countries, you experience the country in a way common to most of the natives who live there. You visit the towns and villages they live in, the shops the purchase their goods in and so on. It is an intimate way to travel through your countries of choice. It is similar to the backpacking concept, but faster with four wheels.
But the question is how do you do it?
You have two options. After deciding where you wish to drive and how many countries and places you wish to visit, you have to make a choice. You can do it as one world-round tour, driving from country to country, renting cars or even taking your own and ferrying them across the seas.
Or, you can do one road trip at a time and spend your life driving across the globe.
If there is one continent where the road trip is synonymous it is North America. The USA has instilled the car and the road trip into its culture and exported that around the world. The very idea we have of a road trip has come from that continent.
America’s neighbour, Canada has an amazingly beautiful road. The Cabot Trail is a 298km road. It traverses Cape Breton offering the most beautiful views in all of Nova Scotia. We suggest you travel the entire length, taking special notice of the northern part of the Trail, where you drive through the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Keep your eyes peeled for the bald eagles, black bears and moose.
Don’t speed through it. Take it at a leisurely pace and explore the towns and villages along the route. You will see plenty of subtle references to the influence of the French and the Scottish throughout history.
Cross over into the land of the free and home of the brave and experience the many joys of an American road trip. We aren’t going to recommend the cliched Route 66 (although you do need to travel down it!). We want to tell you about a road in Colorado. The San Juan Skyway is a 380 km drive through the San Juan Range.
Through the San Juan Range, you will see gushing waterfalls and streams with bright wildflowers popping up everywhere in summer and gorgeous snowy slopes in winter. Both of these seasons are delicious, but it is the transition between them in autumn that truly makes this place. The yellow, orange and red leaves set the landscape a blaze, making it one of the most beautiful places you will ever drive through.
This is where you change continents by moving from North America into South America and head into Bolivia. Bolivia is home to the Salar de Uyuni also known as the world’s largest salt lake. It is perfectly flat and the white expanse seems to go on forever.
This is one of the most surreal places on the planet. When night falls and the moon shines down on it, you will experience an eerie white glow illuminating the salt. When the salt is dry, it is a dazzling light that you will struggle to find anywhere else in nature. And when it rains, this salt lake transforms into a giant mirror, reflecting the peaks surrounding it.
Specifically, you must visit the Gobi Desert. For those of you interested in some truly adventurous off-road action, this is the place to visit. It is the fifth largest desert in the world and Marco Polo had this to say about it all the way back in the 13th Century: “This desert is reported to be so long that it would take a year to go from end to end, and at the narrowest point it takes a month to cross it. It consists entirely of mountains and sands and valleys. There is nothing at all to eat.”
The Gobi Desert in its true remoteness has a rugged beauty that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. There is kilometre after kilometre of nothingness stretching out before you. This is where you can split your time in the desert between driving and something more adventurous. When you feel like slipping out from behind that steering wheel, you can explore the Gobi Desert on camel back and even spend your nights in traditional Ger camps. Well worth the adventure.
In South Africa, there is a place to visit that will blow your mind. The Garden Route is gorgeous and green. It is a lush, slender coastal road travelling between Mossel Bay and Storms River Mouth.
Along with this route, you will experience vineyards and mountains on one side and sandy beaches and rocky shores on the opposite.
When you reach the Storms River Mouth, take yourself off on a walk along the trails with the sea on lashing the rocks below you. A road trip doesn’t have to just include driving.
There are so many amazing locations for you to drive to. Seek that adventure by getting yourself the right car for you. You can either rent a car for each country or make it truly personal by purchasing a car through car finance and making it another companion on the journey.
