The sun has arrived and the heat hits hard. With the summer holidays quickly approaching for teachers, parents, children and those who just want some time off, it is time to plan an adventure. If you are one of those people who don’t mind not flying to the other side of the world to enjoy a holiday, we have a suggestion.
Why not jump into your car and head out on a summer road trip adventure. This can be a short road trip to local events or an outdoor adventure day out (We hear GoApe is awesome). Or it can be a long holiday journey where you drive southwards to cross the Channel into France and drive across the Continent.
Whichever type of road trip you choose for your summer holiday, we recommend getting yourself an SUV. They deliver in terms of space and many have excellent four-wheel drive systems that allow you to go off-road whenever you want. These cars give you that flexibility to add some spice to your adventure.
These cars are our suggestions for you to consider this summer. They cover the range of cars available from affordable SUVs like the Qashqai, to the king of off-road, Land Rover Discovery to the prestige luxury of the Bentley Bentayga.
The Land Rover Discovery has long been the SUV that stands above the rest. It is mostly used for school runs and the weekly shop, but that doesn’t stop Land Rover ensuring it can deal with the off-road challenges too.
It is a seven-seater SUV, but unless you have a large family, it will remain a five-seater the majority of the time. This delivers a 1,137-litre loading bay. If you take one of your friends or family with you in the car, you can drop those other rear seats and increase the capacity to 2,406-litres. The Discovery prides itself on the practicality it offers.
Land Rover has designed the seats inside the Discovery so that it can fit full-grown six-foot adults into each seat. Those final two rear seats rise and fold electronically and manually in 14 seconds, so it doesn’t waste your time. The interior is a great place to sit whether you are a driver or a passenger.
There is also plenty of additional storage with large door bins, two gloveboxes, cupholders, which can be slid back to reveal a deep storage facility beneath. In that storage facility, you get a set of USB charging points. Under the centre armrest, there is plenty of space for tablets and other items. If you want space, there is literally no shortage of it in this car.
The Land Rover Discovery is the perfect car for a long road trip holiday, possibly around the UK or around Europe. The Discovery has an incredibly comfortable air suspension system as standard, delivering a level of comfort throughout the entire journey.
The drive is also smooth thanks to the eight-speed automatic gearbox. This keeps the engines right in their power band, ensuring you have a smooth constant acceleration throughout the drive. When you take it off-road, you have an easy time of it thanks to a ground clearance of 283mm and can easily wade across those rivers.
The Land Rover Discover is the car to get for an all-around amazing SUV experience this summer.
For those trips that are short to the local fair or travelling across the County to visit family, you need an affordable, smaller SUV. The Skoda Yeti is an excellent example to consider. It is a small, practical SUV capable of light off-roading, which is rare in its class of car. None of its rivals offer the off-road option.
Skoda gave the Yeti an excellent interior that stands the test of time against those same rivals. The controls on the dashboard and steering wheel are easy to use. The Yeti Outdoor is the model to choose because you get both the passenger room, luggage space and the four-wheel drive system.
The Yeti Outdoor is agile and despite being a box-like shape, handles its body roll well. The four-wheel drive system allows the Yeti to tackle a variety of different terrains, especially steep climbs and descents. However, there is only a certain amount of places it can go. It cannot wade through swamps for example. But if you need to cross a field or head over a hill, it is the perfect car for it.
Skoda has built the interior to their normal high standard with an easy-to-use control setup. The quality of the material is strong and durable. But for any kind of road trip, space is essential.
The Yeti Outdoor delivers just that. It has ample amounts of head space and legroom all round thanks to its box-like shape. It also has plenty of storage cubbies sprinkled around. You can fit plenty in the boot as well.
With all the seats up, you get 416-litres of capacity. But if you fancy just a trip with 2 or 3 of you, you can extend that capacity. You have the option of dropping two of the rear seats and keeping one up. However, if you fold all three down or remove those seats completely, you get either 1,580-litres or 1,760-litres of space.
The Yeti Outdoor is excellent for trips around the Country and the rest of the Country. You can take it abroad if you wish, but we advise you only do this if you have a small family as it does not have the same seating capacity like the Discovery for example.
For those of you with the overflowing wallets and purses, we have an excellent car to recommend. Luxury SUVs are rising in popularity with many of the more prestige car makers moving into that market. Last year, Bentley joined the crowd with the Bentayga. This is a five-seater luxury SUV with a brand new price ranging from £137,055-£164,755, depending on the optional extras and model you choose.
It is the most expensive SUV on the market so the question is whether the Bentley Bentayga is worth it. The truth is, Bentley has designed the fastest SUV available and as with all Bentley models, offers a level of luxury unknown to other manufacturers.
The first thing you notice about the interior isn’t just the interior design, but also the delicious smell developed by the materials used. The scent of the Bentayga is a mixture of high-quality hide, wood, turned metal and the gorgeous leather of the quilted seats. It is the embodiment of luxury.
For any sort of road trip, comfort is top priority and thanks to those quality leather seats, you have uber (not the taxi service) levels of comfort. You will drive thousands and thousands of miles and not even feel it. In fact, in the rear of the car, the driver has a choice. You can turn the Bentayga into a four-seater with two individual car seats, matching the front two seats or you can opt for the three-seat bench.
The Bentayga only offers 430-litres of boot capacity, but for practicality, it has a hatchback-style boot lid. The floor of the boot is flat making it much easier to load and unload bulky, heavy items. And for the first time in Bentley history, the Bentayga is dog-friendly thanks to the dividers and protective covers you can purchase.
For the price you pay for this big luxury SUV, you would expect this car to be excellent. It truly is. It doesn’t feel like a big off-roader. The suspension ensures a smooth as silk ride over bumpy roads, whilst being in total control of the body roll, despite being a 2.44-tonne SUV. This means that when you drive it into the corners, it feels more like a sports car than an SUV.
The Bentayga has a standard air suspension system like the Discovery, but it has three different modes: Comfort, Bentley and Sport with the Bentley mode striking the balance between Comfort and Sport.
This car is for those of you who love luxury on their road trips in the summer.
