Hatchbacks are the lifeblood of Britain. We purchase them because of their looks, their practicality and how they perform across the board. Hatchbacks offer a great variety of engines that cover affordability, fuel efficiency and speed. Whatever you are looking for, there will be a hatchback that delivers.
One of our favourite hatchbacks is the Ford Fiesta. It has been the best supermini hatchback on the market for the whole of its tenure, thanks to its range of engines and how fun it is to drive.
Ford Fiesta – The supermini to rule them all
The Ford Fiesta is finally getting a brand new upgrade after nine years of service later this year. But that doesn’t mean the current model isn’t still the best supermini hatchback on the market. It has delivered excellence from the moment it was launched, through its 2013 update and still to this day.
The Ford Fiesta offers a great selection of engines that suit everyone’s needs. It has small, affordable engines for the lowest price. These are well equipped for fuel economy and get you from A to B with ease.
Then we have the fuel efficient engines that aim to deliver the best fuel economy for you. The greenest engine is the Fiesta 1.5 TDCi Style model, which produces 88.3 mpg. You will be able to reduce your fuel bills and drive further with this model.
Then there is the car that delivers on speed. This is the Ford Fiesta ST-Line with the fastest being the 1.6 EcoBoost ST-200. It dashes from 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds and delivers a top speed of 142 mph from an engine producing 200 hp.
This is a nine-year-old car, so compared to its rivals, the interior may appear out of date until the new generation comes out later this year. However, this car still delivers a great interior. The seats are comfortable and adjustable so that you, as the driver, get the right position, with the most visibility.
The dashboard is well put together with decent materials, with them getting better as you choose a better model.
In terms of space, the Fiesta is a product of its time. When this current model was first launched, the Fiesta was large in comparison to other superminis. However, since then, its rivals have grown in size, so we will see what happens with the new Fiesta model.
The current model is spacious for both the driver and front passenger. In the rear, it can be a little tight for six-foot adults, but anyone smaller should be fine in terms of head space and legroom. The boot space is 290-litres with the rear seats up and when you drop the seats, it increases to 974-litres.
The Fiesta has a brilliant drive that is exciting, nimble and controlled. It is designed for towns and cities, but on the motorway, it delivers as well. It is light on the controls, with excellent visibility allowing you to slip through traffic and into tight parking spots.
When you hit those A and B roads, you will find no match to how fun the Fiesta can be. The suspension doesn’t allow for body roll, allowing you to be in control constantly. You can push this car further than most other hatchbacks without any discomfort.
